Scale Day at Forton - 2011
Scale Day was postponed by two days in the hope that the strong winds would abate. Unfortunately throughout the day we had to put up with wind of 15mph or more and as a result some of the lighter balsa aircraft were not flown.
Ken Taylor turned up with a Pupeteer and a large Corsair powered by a Zenoah petrol engine and bravely flew both. Richard Oliver turned up with three Spitfires, a Stuka in Eastern Front winter colours and an electric powered Stampe biplane which handled the wind well. John McColley flew a Mustang and a “twin engined German bomber.” Phil Pearson also flew a Mustang and Derek James and Alan Smith displayed an Aeronca Sedan and a PZL-P24 Polish fighter respectively as static exhibits.
A light-hearted competition was held in which all present voted for the best plan or kit-built model; the best-presented ARTF; the best flying display and the model with the best presence in the air. Unremarkably the Corsair won three out of the four classes so I took executive action and disqualified it from two!
Winners of each category were as follows:
-
Best kit-built or plan-built model: Alan Smith’s PZL.
-
Best-presented ARTF: John McColley’s Mustang
-
Best flying display: Richard Oliver’s Spitfire
-
Best Presence in the air: Ken Taylor’s Corsair.
Tea, burgers and sausages were enjoyed by all!
